Course Description
This case study focuses on an Open Learning Pilot Project (OLPP) in the Liverpool Business School (LBS) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). It describes the teaching and learning context of the LBS, then traces the origins of the OLPP as one response to increasing student numbers and to concern about the quality of the student learning experience.
After explaining the structure of the OLPP and its mode of course delivery, the main sections of the study deal with the issues and learning points that arose during the change from conventional lecture-based provision. These centre around: the contextual constraints on the innovation; issues of student expectations and learner support; aspects of content and materials design; learning and assessment issues; evaluation; and institutional and staff factors.
The case study then outlines the reasons why a promising innovation was not continued and in conclusion offers a checklist of innovations issues a practical aid, based on the OLPP experience, for those who may be involved in similar open learning initiatives in a Higher Education (HE) setting. The views expressed in the case study are those of the author, and not necessarily those of the institution.
